You Can Afford Sleep Apnea Treatment

Health insurance plans often contribute to or cover the cost of oral appliances to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If you're uninsured or need help managing any out-of-pocket costs, we can create an in-house payment plan that fits your budget. We also accept financing through CareCredit® for qualifying patients.

Our Albuquerque team can discuss your options before treatment begins, so there are no surprises when it comes to costs.

Using the Most Advanced Tech for Sleep Apnea Diagnoses

Dr. James Slaman discusses the basics of sleep apnea, including diagnosis and treatment options. Obstructive sleep apnea disrupts breathing several times throughout the night. Sleep apnea patients may need a CPAP machine or an oral appliance.

Receive a Custom Oral Appliance

An oral appliance is an innovative treatment for sleep apnea that's more comfortable and efficient than a CPAP machine. After confirming that you suffer from OSA, Dr. Slaman can design an oral appliance that you wear at night, just like a retainer. The appliance gently moves your jaw forward and prevents your top and bottom teeth from touching. This opens up your airway, allowing for unobstructed breathing.

The Benefits of Oral Appliances for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Undisturbed Sleep

A CPAP mask provides continuous positive airway pressure delivered through a hose that's connected to an electric fan. You wear the CPAP mask while you sleep. While effective, many patients find CPAP treatment to be noisy and uncomfortable. Plus, the machine is difficult to travel with. A silent, comfortable oral appliance allows for more freedom at night so you can easily roll over or get a glass of water. It also fits in a small, plastic case for easy travel.

No Need for Surgery

Sleep apnea surgery involves an oral surgeon removing excess tissue in the back of your throat that is blocking your upper airway or corrective jaw surgery to move your jaw forward. An oral appliance from our Albuquerque dentist allows patients to skip surgery.

Affordable Treatment

Oral appliance therapy for sleep apnea tends to be less expensive than CPAP therapy and surgical procedures. In fact, it's often covered by insurance, so it may come at absolutely no cost to you. See if you're a candidate for an oral appliance during a free consultation.

Diagnosing and Treating Sleep Apnea

If you have symptoms like loud snoring, gasping for air while asleep, daytime fatigue, and concentration issues, you may have obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleep Survey

Before your appointment at our Albuquerque dental office, request and fill out our sleep survey to help Dr. Slaman better evaluate your symptoms. You can either email it to us or bring it to your appointment.

Pharyngometer

Dr. Slaman will use a pharyngometer, a minimally invasive ultrasound tool, to determine if you have obstructive sleep apnea. Our pharyngometer works by sending harmless sound waves into your airways to measure the flow of your breath. The test only takes about five minutes.

Diagnosis

Dr. Slaman will review your sleep survey and the results of your ultrasound exam to determine the severity of your airway obstruction and the best treatment for you. Mild sleep apnea (5-15 awakenings per hour) may need different treatment than moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (30 or more awakenings per hour).

Oral Appliance

Dr. Slaman will create a custom oral appliance that fits comfortably in your mouth. Once your oral device is properly adjusted, you may notice a dramatic difference in the way you feel after getting a few nights of deeper sleep. If your treatment plan involves weight loss or other lifestyle changes, you may experience even more far-reaching effects.

Follow Up

During follow-up appointments, Dr. Slaman can use his ultrasound technology to measure the difference in airflow. By monitoring your progress, he can make adjustments to your device for optimal results and a good night's sleep every night.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sleep Apnea Treatment in Albuquerque, NM

What is obstructive sleep apnea?

Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the soft tissues in the back of your throat relax and block your upper airway during sleep. This can happen dozens of times during the night, causing you to stop breathing and wake up gasping for air, even if you don't remember it. This airway obstruction can also cause loud snoring as air squeezes past the vibrating, relaxed muscles.

What contributes to sleep apnea?

Factors that can contribute to sleep apnea include your anatomy, age, and lifestyle. Upper airways that are smaller than normal, enlarged tonsils/uvula, being 40 years or older, being overweight, excessive smoking, excessive drinking, and having a large neck, recessed chin, or severe overbite can all contribute to sleep apnea.

What are the different types of sleep apnea?

There are three types of sleep apnea: obstructive, central, and complex. Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common form and occurs when the airways are blocked. Dr. Slaman can help you manage it with a CPAP machine or an oral appliance. Central sleep apnea occurs when the brain doesn't send the correct signals to the muscles that control your breathing. Complex sleep apnea is a combination of the two. Patients with central or complex sleep apnea may require a specialist.
